PPTP vs L2TP vs OpenVPN

You’ll see three connection types (protocols) mentioned across our service. All three are available on your account and on VPN Routers via Manage Router.

  • OpenVPN (OVPN) — our default and recommended protocol: strong encryption with excellent reliability, and the largest choice of servers.

  • L2TP — strong encryption with lower overhead on some routes; often the fix for buffering when streaming from Europe (France, Germany, Spain).

  • PPTP — the oldest protocol. Fast but with weak encryption by modern standards; only recommended for casual browsing or older devices that support nothing newer.

Not sure? Leave it on OpenVPN. If you get buffering from a European server, try L2TP — or contact support and we’ll move you.
