This is the digital copy of the Blue Booklet included in your VPN Router box. Your VPN Router sits alongside your existing internet router — it does not replace it. Devices connected to the VPN Router's WiFi are automatically on the VPN.
1Connect the cables
-
Plug the yellow cable into the WAN port on the VPN Router — this is the port next to the power lead.
-
Plug the other end of the yellow cable into any spare LAN port on your existing internet (ISP) router.
-
Connect the power lead to the VPN Router and switch it on.
2Activate
-
New customers: go to www.libertyshield.com/activate and enter the codes printed in your Blue Booklet.
-
Existing customers replacing or upgrading a router: do NOT use the activate page. Log in to the Client Area, open Manage Router, click “To Replace Your Router Click Here” and enter the serial number printed on the bottom of the new router.
Note: Your VPN Router will not broadcast WiFi until activation is complete and your subscription is active. You will receive a confirmation email once activation finishes.
3Connect your devices
-
On your TV, Firestick, phone or other device, join the new WiFi network shown in your Blue Booklet.
-
On dual-band models (Pro and WiFi 6 Pro), connect streaming devices to the -5G network for the best speeds.
-
To check it is working, open a browser on the device and visit showmemyip.com — it should show your chosen VPN country, not your own ISP.
Your router model and speeds
-
Lite (MikroTik hAP Lite Tower) — up to ~30 Mbps, 2.4GHz WiFi only. Ideal for HD streaming.
-
Pro (MikroTik hAP AC2) — up to ~90 Mbps, dual band (2.4GHz & 5GHz). Ideal for 4K streaming.
-
Pro 6 (MikroTik hAP AX2) — 200 Mbps+, WiFi 6, best for 1Gbps fibre lines.
Note: A wired (Ethernet) connection to the VPN Router is always faster than WiFi.
Common questions
-
Change VPN country: log in at www.libertyshield.com, select the country flag and click Apply. Then power the VPN Router off, wait 10 seconds, and power it back on so it picks up the new setting.
-
Change WiFi name or password: log in and open Manage Router.
-
Slow speeds or buffering: open Manage Router and select a different server. If you are streaming from Europe (France, Germany, Spain), an L2TP server usually fixes buffering.
-
Can't see the WiFi network? The router stops broadcasting WiFi when a subscription expires. Log in and check Active Subscriptions on your dashboard first.
-
No internet on the VPN WiFi? Do a full power cycle: switch everything off, turn the ISP router on and wait 2 minutes, then turn the VPN Router on and wait 2 minutes. Check your devices have rejoined the VPN WiFi.
-
ISP router firewall: if the VPN will not connect at all, check your ISP router does not have a firewall or “stealth mode” blocking VPN traffic (common on Virgin Media — enable VPN passthrough).
-
Streaming device shows the wrong location? Make sure the device is connected to the VPN Router's WiFi, not your ISP router's WiFi — then restart the device so it picks up the new connection.
-
Using the VPN away from home: download our apps for Windows, Mac, iPhone/iPad and Android at www.libertyshield.com/Home/Downloads. Note: your account uses one location at a time — changing country in the app also changes the router.
Important — please never press the reset button
Holding the recessed reset button wipes the VPN configuration from the router and it will stop working entirely. If something isn't right, use the power cycle above or contact support — we're here 365 days a year, 9am–9pm UK time.
