VPN on Intel Macs (and the old macOS Sonoma guide)

The Sonoma-era OpenVPN/Firewall workaround this article used to describe is no longer needed. Which guide you need now depends on the chip inside your Mac, not on your version of macOS.

Which Mac do you have?

Click the Apple menu in the top left of your screen, then About This Mac. Look at the Chip or Processor line.

Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4 or later)

Install the Liberty Shield VPN app from the Mac App Store. Steps are in VPN Software - Mac (iMac & MacBook).

Intel processor

The Mac App Store app only runs on Apple Silicon Macs. On an Intel Mac the App Store shows Not compatible with this device and the Get button is greyed out, even if you are running the latest macOS. This is a hardware limit, so updating macOS will not change it.

Intel Macs connect using a manual VPN setup instead. Either route works:

  1. Manual OpenVPN using the free Tunnelblick client and the configuration files attached to this article (OpenVPN_Config_Files.zip, below). Steps are in Manual OpenVPN setup (Windows & Mac).
  2. Manual L2TP using the VPN client built into macOS, no extra software needed. Steps are in Manual VPN - Mac OS (iMac & MacBook).

With either method you sign in with your usual Liberty Shield username and password. To change country, update your VPN location on the website first, then disconnect and reconnect. Check it worked at showmemyip.com.
