Channel 4 (via the app or website) can show ‘not available in your location’ errors, buffering, or specific error codes (e.g. 4001 Stream Geoblock) even when your VPN is connected. It’s one of the stricter UK broadcasters — it checks your device’s time zone/region as well as your IP.
Quick fixes first: switch to a different UK server for a fresh IP, then fully close and reopen the Channel 4 app; disable IPv6 on the viewing device (or set DNS to Automatic); on iPhone/iPad/Android, turn off Location Services for the Channel 4 app — it checks GPS. Still blocked? Contact support with the error code and the server you’re using and we’ll refresh the IP.
If those don’t clear it, the next most common cause is your device’s time zone or region not matching your VPN’s UK IP. Ensure your VPN is connected to a UK server first — verify via the Liberty Shield app or a site like whatismyip.com — then set your device’s time zone to the United Kingdom using the steps below.
Fixing the time zone by device
-
Press Home on the remote to go to the Fire TV home screen.
-
Scroll right to Settings (gear icon).
-
Select Preferences > Time Zone.
-
Choose Europe, then select London / GMT (or BST).
-
Clear the Channel 4 app’s cache: Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > Channel 4 (or “All 4”) > Clear Cache, then Clear Data. You’ll need to sign back in afterwards.
-
Restart the Firestick: Settings > My Fire TV > Restart.
-
Once it’s back up, confirm it has reconnected to your VPN router’s WiFi (or that your VPN app is connected).
-
Open Settings (Windows key + I).
-
Go to Time & language > Date & time.
-
Turn off “Set time zone automatically”, then set the Time zone drop-down to (UTC+00:00) Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London.
-
If issues persist, also turn off “Set time automatically” and sync the clock manually via Sync now.
-
If accessing Channel 4 via a browser, also clear your browser’s cache and cookies.
-
Open the Apple menu > System Settings (Ventura+) or System Preferences (Monterey and earlier).
-
Go to General > Date & Time (System Settings) or Date & Time (System Preferences).
-
Click the padlock and enter your password to unlock changes.
-
Uncheck “Set time zone automatically using current location”, then set the Closest City to London (or select United Kingdom on the map).
-
If accessing Channel 4 via a browser, also clear your browser’s cache and cookies.
After making these changes, restart the Channel 4 app or your browser and try again. If you’re still stuck, contact support and confirm your current VPN connection IP address.
